Sometimes, we’re meant to sit down.
Not because we’re tired. Not because we’re done.
But because someone else needs a soft place to land.
I had just stepped away from a loud party. One of those vibrant, buzzing events full of music, movement, and laughter. But inside me, the noise had started to rise. My breath felt uneven. My thoughts scrambled for quiet. I could feel the edge of an anxiety attack building, so I slipped away to find stillness. To regroup. To breathe.
And that’s when I saw you.
You weren’t performing. You weren’t hiding. You were simply there. Crying, alone, and visibly overwhelmed. The kind of overwhelmed that doesn’t need fixing, just presence.
I asked if I could sit with you.
You nodded.
You told me you were overstimulated.
I told you I understood.
I handed you my fan.
We didn’t speak much after that. Just let the moment hold us both.
We sat together, letting the breeze from the small fan do what it could. Letting the sunset and its warm colors remind us that endings can be gentle. Watching the flags sway in the wind like prayers on fabric.
Eventually, your friends found you. They didn’t rush. They didn’t fill the silence. They just joined us—each of us present with our own emotions, our own quiet griefs and quiet healings.
There’s a kind of magic in these pauses. A sacred hush that rarely fits into our schedules or our plans.
It struck me later how empathy, too, can be overstimulating.
To feel deeply, to notice, to care—it’s a beautiful burden.
One that demands rest. One that asks for boundaries even as it breaks them to offer comfort.
But in that moment, the pause wasn’t a burden.
It was a balm.
Sometimes we sit down for ourselves.
Sometimes we sit down for someone else.
And sometimes, if we’re lucky, sitting down becomes an act of collective care.
a stillness that saves us both.
